My name is Meena Kabbani.
I am an artist based in New York and Los Angeles and a current senior at Fordham University studying both Visual Arts and Communications.
While my work ranges from digital and film photography to web design, at my core, I am and will always be a graphic designer first. Whether it was drawing an eye on the corner of my homework assignments or putting cursor to computer screen to create whatever new idea popped into my mind, art has always been my most valued form of expression.
All pieces of art are extensions of their creators and influenced by the different parts that make up the whole of a person; my work is no exception. My identity has shaped my outlook on the world and the way I create. I’m Palestinian and Jordanian and I grew up in the beach cities of Los Angeles, so my roots have impacted my work in all aspects. Being born and raised in America surrounded by the rest of my family who had immigrated here creates a shared experience every first-gen kid can relate to: finding the balance between where you’re from and where you are now. Verbal expressions of who you are can feel trite after years of explaining your background, but an artistic expression of identity will always feel new and exciting, as if you’ve unlocked a new part of yourself. I am not just one thing and neither is my work. Whatever project is given to me, I’m able to adapt to what is being asked and produce high quality work that can fit any needs.
I love geometric shapes, the Bauhaus Movement, Damien Chazelle films, leading lines, my dog, the NYT crossword, to-do lists, bad reality TV, finding the perfect font, and the color red.
Thank you for stopping by :)
I have always loved the way my initials, M and K, looked when joined at the
rightmost part of the M and leftmost part of the K until I realized that
is already a trademarked logo. So instead, I followed the
same principle but used my initials in Arabic. I combined the shapes
of the م (meem) and ق (qaaf) to form a version of my original signature
that pays homage to my background.
